The
National College of Physical Education and Sports (NCPES)
was established on July 1, 1987. With the management and
dedication of the founder, Professor Min-Chung Tsai, and
the preceding presidents, Prof. Jin-Song Chou and Jin-Chin
Yeh, the College has made significant and great progress
during the past decades. After his assuming the presidency
on July 1, 2002, Prof. Hong-Shih Chou has led the institute
to a further new, innovative, culture-based, and globalization-
oriented development.
In accordance with the ideals of wholeness and well-roundedness
and in response to the demand of the society, NCPES
emphasizes the cultivation of well-rounded professionals
and the development of humanities and culture so as
to promote the project on “The Enhancement of the Five
Capabilities of Students.” The project encompasses
the enhancement of professionalism, enhancement of English
abilities, enhancement of culture and humanities, and
enhancement of sports habits.
The mission of the institute has always aimed at placing
an equal amount of emphases on both academics and skills.
In the sports academic specializations, a lot of students
have earned their PhD degrees from NCPES even since
the establishment of the doctoral programs in the institute
in 1999. Their graduation and achievement bears great
significance of promoting the national sports academic
levels as well as competitiveness in our country.
In the sports skills field, NCPES has proved itself
outstanding as well. In the summer Olympics held in
Athens, 2004, Mu-Yen Chu, one of our senior students,
became the first Taiwanese (ROC citizen) that ever wins
a gold medal in the Olympics. This amazing feat resulted
in a strengthening of ties among people in the whole
country. Moreover, in addition to Chu’s gold medal
in the Men’s Taekwondo Event, two other athletes of
the institute, Shih-Yuan Chen and Hui-Ru Wu, also won
a silver medal and a bronze medal in Men’s and Women’s
Archery Event, respectively. Their distinguished performance
has demonstrated a fruitful achievement in running a
sports institute of higher learning.
NCPES, built on firm foundations established by our
preceding and current presidents, will continue its
implementation of the ideals of “wholeness” and “well-roundedness”
and the project on “The Enhancement of the Five Capabilities
of Students” in the future. Concomitantly, the institute
will expand the book donation programs, complete the
construction of the research building, the multi-purpose
hall, and the heated swimming pool, strengthen the national
and international academic exchange programs, upgrade
the levels of the facilities to meet international standards,
and heighten the sports academic and skill levels of
the whole institute.
